Jennifer Angelo
My work is grounded in a deep appreciation of the lasting nature of felted wool. Felt has been used for thousands of years, and I am drawn to its timeless beauty and the infinite possibilities of using natural fibers as a medium for artistic expression.
My inspiration comes from the five years I lived in New Zealand, where I witnessed the power of the Pacific Ocean waves crashing waves into boulders, the gentle swaying of red tussock grasses and the grazing Merino sheep. I was struck by the contrast between the power of the ocean and the calm of the animals. At the heart of my work is a commitment to being as bold as the ocean waves and as serene as the sheep. The slow and meditative process of making felt by hand allows me to immerse myself in the art, exploring new ideas and pushing the limits of the wool.
My technique involves meticulously laying out individual wool wisps before wetting the material with soapy water, rolling it in bubble wrap and agitating it to encourage the fibers to entangle. The result is a luxurious, durable felt, which I use to create wall art.
