Francis Stanton

I work in linocut, woodcut, silkscreen, scratchboard, and photography. Inspiration comes from the natural world and activities of humans. I look for patterns in nature, the interplay of light on a scene, and the subtleties of colors. For subjects I prefer what would be called “intimate landscapes,” – close-in views of natural scenes and objects.

My upbringing in an artistic family, and my career in print cartography, have helped me form my artistic sensibilities and methods. Combining methods is interesting: I’ve been using silkscreens and linocuts together, or linocuts and stencils, and sometimes adding watercolor or gouache by hand. Computer imaging effects add a different approach and feel to the images.
