Most of my work begins with a few simple sketches outlining the main features of my idea.   When making a small piece such as a ring box the first step is to select a piece of wood that seems to embody the look and feel of what I want to create.    To me the wood must “speak” its consent, show a willingness to be transformed.   I have learned, usually with a fair amount of discomfort, that trying to force an idea from a piece of unsuitable wood will result in a failed idea.  The idea of compatibility with the wood is stated over and over in the books and work of James Krenov, the Swedish/American woodworker whom I admire greatly.  If the piece is a large cabinet or desk, then it is important that the boards be selected so the matching sides will have wood grain that is in harmony and that the color and texture is consistent.    My goal is to create a piece that has harmony between all of its components and hopefully will provide an artistic experience while performing the function it was designed for.   If he piece takes shape similar to my original idea then the finishing work should bring out the grain and color defining the character of the piece.   It should feel smooth and natural to the touch.

Sometimes the wood comes first actually being the inspiration for an idea.  I enjoy using flawed pieces with major knots or cracks and building a simple strong shape to incorporate with the misshapen piece.  Quite often the end cuts from a large project will yield interesting and challenging material.  Spalted wood, especially Maple is one of my favorite woods along with Cherry, Walnut and some exotics.  It is rewarding to find a new use for a cast off destined for the fireplace.

Recently in my small boxes, I have experimented with dying woods creating vibrant colors and mottled textures.  Primary colors infused on Birdseye Maple create interest and can best withstand the critical eye of a purest.   My goal is always to create works that are well made, pleasing to the eye and destined to become family treasures.
