SHERRY ACKERMAN

2011

Like so many Madisonians I’m a transplant, born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio.  I entered my freshman year at UW-Madison majoring in art but found it too competitive, stressful and time-consuming.  Here I am 40+ years later, a retired teacher and proud grandmother of six, venturing into the competitive world of art.  The irony makes me smile a lot!

In those middle years, I raised 2 wonderful daughters, taught Spanish and Chinese, spent many summers traveling the world, taught English in Venezuela and always found time to paint.

I’ve had a passion for art for as long as I can remember.  When I was in 6th grade, the art teacher chose my chalk drawing to hang in the Board of Education Building and I was hooked from then on.

I spent 30 years painting in oil and acrylic then switched to watercolor about 10 years ago. I’ve always been a bit of a nonconformist and a risk taker – thinking outside the box and trying to push the boundaries even from there.  Many of my paintings, often humorous or fanciful, reflect that part of my personality.   A lot are painted with children in mind but I find that grownups like them just as much!

I find that working in watercolor is magical, humbling, soothing and exciting.  Colors, nature, contrasts and the play of light and shadow inspire me.  When I get started painting, there aren’t enough hours in the day!
